Overview

The Gurung village of Sikles was established by ACAP as a model trekking village and is an integral part of their eco-route. Located to the north-east of Pokhara at about 2000 m elevation, it lies in the shadow of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal. It is possibly the second largest Gurung village in Nepal, and is known for its well preserved Gurung culture. During your stay here, you will get to spend several days experiencing the Gurung lifestyle, handicraft production and sight-seeing. Of particular interest is the local cloth weaving traditions and the ancient water-driven flourmills.

Above the village is Rishing Danda, from where a marvelous panoramic view of the peaks of Annapurna II and Lamjung can be had. This place is also famous as a point from where one can observe avalanches thundering down off the mountain sides. Folk songs and dances play an important part in the Gurung culture and such performances are common occurrences in Sikles. One performance that outclasses the rest is the Ghantu dance, traditionally performed by three young Gurung girls. This dance is of great significance as it portrays their heritage.

Accommodation in Sikles can be arranged in teahouses or, by prior reservation with ACAP Pokhara Office, in village homes. The journey begins with a taxi ride from Pokhara to Kabhre Danda which is followed by a two-day trek to reach Sikles via Chansu. On the return journey, which is a three-day easy trek, follow the eco-route through the Ghalekharka and Diprang to arrive back in Pokhara.

Short Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Katmandu, transfer to hotel, brief about the trip, and well-come dinner at evening through the typical Nepalese kitchen.

Day 02: Kathmandu Valley sight seeing. And prepare for Trekking.

Day 05: Kharpani- Ghalekharka

Day 06: Ghalekharka- Nyaulikharka

Equipment List

Following gives a general idea of the personal items to trek in Nepal. The personal items, in fact, are of individual interest, choice and luxury. Besides, the most important fact he/she must consider is the time of the year, trekking days, region and altitude.

We have compiled a recommended comprehensive list of necessities that will prepare you for an enjoyable trip. The following gives you a general idea of what to bring to Nepal including clothing, equipment & gear for trekking in Nepal.

1. Clothing

• Walking shoes:
• A pair of sandals
• A warm jacket. Fiber filled or down should be adequate.
• A rainproof jacket with a hood or a poncho.
• A nylon windbreaker and wind pants.
• Woolen shirts and thick sweaters.
• A pair of lightweight/ heavy weight trousers.
• A tracksuit could be useful for wearing when resting in teahouses.
• Hats: a woolen hat to wear in the morning and at night during winter and a sunhat that has a wide brim to cover the face and neck.
• A pair of gloves or mittens.
• Woolen socks. Stuff an extra pair in your bag just in case.

2. Equipment and Accessories

• A duffle bag, canvas or nylon, without a frame (for porters to carry gear).
• A daypack or rucksack for personal belonging for you to carry for the day e.g. toiletries, camera, tissue, soap, etc.
• A sleeping bag, warm to 20 degrees F, either down or fiber-filled.
• A water bottle.
• Snow glasses and sunglasses.
• 2-4 large plastic bags to separate clean clothes from dirty ones.
• Wallet and /or money belt with compartment for coins.
• Toiletries with large and small towels.
• Small headlamp and/ or flashlight with spare batteries.
• Snow gaiters essential during winter.
• An umbrella (optional), which is quite useful to as a sunshade and useful when it rains.
• Reading materials, camera and film, rechargeable batteries, note book, rubber band, pen and pencil, envelopes, a diary, a calendar, a pocket knife, a small pillow or headrest. Thermoses (optional)- an inflatable sleeping mat, trekking map, adequate quantities of passport photograph.
• Sun block cream

We suggest you use your experience and the recommended items above to find the best gear for you. Most of the above equipment & gear are available for sale or rent at shops around Kathmandu. However, most trekking equipment in Nepal is either used equipment that was sold by other trekkers or mountaineering expeditions or locally made reproductions of internationally known brands.
